Bare Bones
16xSimplified Minecraft textures with a charming cartoon look. Reduces visual noise while adding personality, making it great for content creators.

What Bare Bones looks like on blocks

Those nine blocks are drawn straight from the texture files inside Bare Bones itself, at 16x. Every pack on this site is rendered in the same nine positions, so lining Bare Bones up against another render shows nothing but Bare Bones's own art.

About Bare Bones
RobotPants released Bare Bones as 16x cartoon artwork for Minecraft. Bare Bones replaces the game's default art with bold outlines, flat saturated colour, and a hand-drawn storybook charm, giving worlds a bright, playful atmosphere. Bare Bones stays at the native 16x grid, so the art reads instantly and sits comfortably on top of vanilla geometry without bloating file size.
The details that mark it out: it keeps textures simple and readable, keeps everything clean and uncluttered, is a favourite of content creators, and has an understated, charming style. Across terrain and buildings alike, Bare Bones blocks are simplified into punchy shapes with strong colour blocking and cartoon-style shading, which is why Bare Bones reads as a whole rather than a patch.
Bare Bones targets Java and Bedrock and is kept compatible with the 1.19 to 1.21 range. Bare Bones weighs 4 MB with low impact, so it lands best with long survival worlds on ordinary machines.
A block face in Bare Bones is 256 pixels, RobotPants's vanilla-size grid. Bare Bones changes come from RobotPants's art, not from extra room, so Bare Bones stays this size on purpose. We have 4 versions of Bare Bones on file, last refreshed 2025-03-30.
What Bare Bones changes
With Bare Bones active the game draws from artwork that stays on the vanilla 16x grid. In detail:
- Resolution stays at 16x, so block faces keep the classic pixel grid while the artwork itself is redrawn.
- Simplified textures: trims detail to keep frame rates high on weaker hardware.
- Content-friendly: contributes to Bare Bones's distinctive cartoon style across the world.
- Clean look: keeps the screen legible when there is a lot happening on it.
- Reduced noise: trims detail to keep frame rates high on weaker hardware.
- The through line: blocks are simplified into punchy shapes with strong colour blocking and cartoon-style shading.

Performance & requirements
Because Bare Bones is a 16x pack, the performance cost over default Minecraft is negligible. Frame rates stay essentially identical to vanilla, which makes it a safe pick for laptops, integrated graphics, and older machines.
Officially it supports Minecraft 1.19 through 1.21; on Java the newest listed version is the safest bet, and older saves usually load it without issue.
At 4 MB, the pack fits easily in memory on a modern machine, and giving Minecraft 4 GB of RAM or more keeps chunk loading smooth.
What is inside Bare Bones
There are 3,408 texture files in Bare Bones, of which 90 move: water, fire, portals and the rest of the things that never stand still. It leaves the models alone, so every block keeps its vanilla shape and only the surface is different.
The bulk of it sits in blocks (1,113 files), followed by items (812) and mobs and entities (665). Reading the width out of the files themselves, 1,599 of 1,601 block and item textures come in at 16 pixels, which is what the pack claims to be.
No part of it depends on OptiFine, so vanilla Minecraft shows you the whole pack. Nothing about the audio changes in Bare Bones, which matters if you have grown used to the vanilla sounds.

Bare Bones covers 1,100 blocks and copies twelve
This is the widest coverage of any 16 pixel pack here: 1,100 of the game's 1,269 block textures are its own drawing, and 169 stay original. Twelve of the files it ships are byte for byte identical to what the game already had, so those twelve blocks look unchanged whether the pack is on or off. It is the only pack measured here where that happens at all.
The flattening is real and it is large. Average brightness sits 43.3 points above the original art, second only to Anemoia and ahead of everything else here, which is the whole trick: strip the noise out of a texture and what is left reads brighter. Colours spread 5 points further apart. Only 10 textures are additions of its own, and 1,082 of the replacements are true 16 pixel art with 18 drawn at 32.
Does Bare Bones work with Minecraft 26.2?
Behind by 4 releases
The newest Minecraft version Bare Bones covers is 1.21.11, which puts it 4 releases behind the current 26.2. That is 81 Minecraft versions covered, going back to 1.6.1 at the far end.
You can still install it on a newer game, but any block added after 1.21.11 keeps its vanilla texture, so the look ends up mixed.

Is Bare Bones still updated?
Updates have slowed
The most recent Bare Bones release is from 20 December 2025, 9 months ago. For a pack that usually moves faster than that, the gap is worth knowing about before you pick it. Its 16 update rounds since 6 November 2023 sit roughly 23 days apart, which is the pace to compare any gap against.
Between 2023 and 2025, Bare Bones managed 16 rounds, 13 in 2025 alone, 2 in the past year, with 227 days as its longest pause, ended 21 June 2024.
Judge that against its own pace rather than the calendar: the gap is longer than usual for this pack, which shows up first on blocks from the newest Minecraft version.

Is Bare Bones free to re-host or edit?
Playing, yes. Passing Bare Bones on, no. There is no license field on the listing for Bare Bones, and an empty field is not permission: it leaves RobotPants holding every right, the same as any unlicensed work. So a mirror of Bare Bones, a modpack carrying Bare Bones, a paid server handing out Bare Bones, or an edit of Bare Bones put back online all wait on one thing, a yes from RobotPants. Your own game is another matter entirely: download Bare Bones, drop it into resourcepacks, play, stream, record. That is also why we send you to RobotPants for the file rather than keeping Bare Bones on our own server.
More Cartoon Packs
Sphax PureBDcraft outlines every block like a comic panel, and mod patches extend the style past vanilla, with multiple resolutions and custom fonts on offer.
Anemoia softens every edge and pulls the palette toward pastel, aiming for cozy rather than sharp, with a custom sky to finish the dreamy atmosphere.
JoliCraft draws Minecraft as a storybook: hand-drawn animals, warm tones, and whimsical little details throughout every block it touches.
Rodrigo hand-paints every block below vanilla's own pixel count, so the chunkiness is the whole point, not a compromise, with custom particles and animated blocks throughout.
