About Default Dark Mode
nebuIr released Default Dark Mode as 16x faithful artwork for Minecraft. Default Dark Mode replaces the game's default art with the original Minecraft silhouette redrawn at a cleaner, sharper fidelity, giving worlds the familiar vanilla feel, just crisper. Default Dark Mode keeps the native grid on purpose. Its detail comes from the drawing, not from extra pixels to fill.
Where it separates from its neighbours is that it reskins the interface into an eye-friendly dark mode, gives the GUI and inventory a full reskin, stays faithful to the vanilla art direction, and is easier on the eyes at night. Look closer at Default Dark Mode and every block keeps its recognisable vanilla shape while gaining tidier edges and richer pixel detail, a treatment Default Dark Mode applies right across the block list.
Default Dark Mode needs Java Edition. nebuIr's Default Dark Mode covers Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21. Default Dark Mode weighs 2 MB with low impact, so it lands best with players who want a different feel without a hardware conversation.
A block face in Default Dark Mode is 256 pixels, nebuIr's vanilla-size grid. Default Dark Mode changes come from nebuIr's art, not from extra room, so Default Dark Mode stays this size on purpose. We have 3 versions of Default Dark Mode on file, last refreshed 2025-02-14.
What Default Dark Mode changes
Default Dark Mode redraws the game with a redrawn 16x sheet. What that means once you are in a world:
- Resolution stays at 16x, so block faces keep the classic pixel grid while the artwork itself is redrawn.
- Dark GUI: means the interface is redrawn too, not just the blocks.
- Dark inventory: means the interface is redrawn too, not just the blocks.
- Dark chat: contributes to Default Dark Mode's distinctive faithful style across the world.
- Vanilla blocks: contributes to Default Dark Mode's distinctive faithful style across the world.
- Overall direction: every block keeps its recognisable vanilla shape while gaining tidier edges and richer pixel detail.
How to install Default Dark Mode (Java Edition)
- 1Keep the Default Dark Mode .zip (2 MB) zipped, place it in the folder behind Options, Resource Packs, Open Pack Folder, then select it from the list.

Performance & requirements
Because Default Dark Mode is a 16x pack, the performance cost over default Minecraft is negligible. Frame rates stay essentially identical to vanilla, which makes it a safe pick for laptops, integrated graphics, and older machines.
The supported range runs 1.20 to 1.21. Stick to the newest of those on Java, though older saves rarely have trouble with it.
2 MB of textures sit comfortably in memory on any modern machine; allocating 4 GB or more of RAM to Minecraft keeps chunk loading smooth.
What is inside Default Dark Mode
Counted in the pack itself, Default Dark Mode holds 597 texture files, 14 of them animated. It leaves the models alone, so every block keeps its vanilla shape and only the surface is different.
Reading the width out of the files themselves, 36 of 36 block and item textures come in at 16 pixels, which is what the pack claims to be.
No part of it depends on OptiFine, so vanilla Minecraft shows you the whole pack. Nothing about the audio changes in Default Dark Mode, which matters if you have grown used to the vanilla sounds.

Default Dark Mode changes no block textures
Every one of the game's 1,269 block textures is untouched here, and that is not a shortcoming. This pack repaints the interface: inventory panels, container backgrounds, the recipe book, the advancement screens and the creative inventory, several hundred images in total, plus a handful of item icons.
So install it expecting a different menu and the same world. Nothing you place, mine or build with will look any different, which also means it costs nothing in the way a high resolution pack does and it sits happily on top of whatever else you are running.
Does Default Dark Mode work with Minecraft 26.2?
Covers 26.2
Default Dark Mode covers Minecraft 26.2, which is the current release, so you can use it on an up to date game without waiting for anything. That is 86 Minecraft versions covered, going back to 1.6.1 at the far end.
